If your solar panel isn't charging your Kiwibit 2 Pro, or is charging more slowly than expected, this guide will help you identify common causes and walk you through effective solutions.

How to Tell If the Solar Panel Is Charging

You can confirm whether your Kiwibit 2 Pro is charging in two ways:

Through the Kiwibit App

On the Home Page: Look for the battery icon on the device feed. If the icon shows a green lightning bolt, the solar panel is actively charging the feeder.
In the Device Settings Page: Tap the gear icon (settings) on the device feed to open settings. The battery percentage appears at the top; if charging, it will include a green lightning bolt.

On the Device Itself

If charging is active, a yellow indicator light will illuminate on the bird feeder.

Tip: This indicator light feature is turned off by default. To enable it, go to Device Setting > Indicator Light in the Kiwibit app and switch it on.

If the battery power remains low for hours in direct sunlight, the feeder may not be charging effectively.

Possible Causes and Solutions

Make Sure the Battery Pack Is Properly Installed

The Kiwibit 2 Pro comes with a removable rechargeable battery pack. If the insulation sticker on the battery pack hasn't been removed, the battery pack will not charge at all.

Open the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the feeder.
Push the metal tab toward the battery pack to release it.
Peel off the orange insulation sticker from the battery pack.
Ensure the battery pack surface and contacts are clean and free of dust or residue.

Tips: To clean the contacts, locate the six gold battery contacts on the pack. The simplest method is to wipe them with a dry, lint-free cloth or tissue. For best results, use a cotton swab lightly moistened with rubbing alcohol. Be sure to clean each contact one by one.
Reinsert the battery pack and close the compartment securely.

Check That the Solar Roof Is Properly Connected

Ensure the USB-C connector from the solar roof is fully inserted into the charging port of the bird feeder. Refer to the comparison image below to see the difference between a loose connection and a fully inserted connection.
Inspect the port for dust, debris, or corrosion, and clean it gently if needed.

Tips: Use a dry soft cloth or paper tissue to clean the port. Do not use water or cleaning liquid. Make sure the port is fully dry before reconnecting.
Inspect the surface of the solar panel for dust, smudges, or debris, which can block sunlight and reduce charging efficiency.

Check That the Feeder, Battery Pack, and Solar Panel Are Working

Test the battery pack: Remove it from the bird feeder and use a USB-C charger with 5V/2A output (e.g., a standard phone wall charger) to charge it directly.
- If the battery pack charges as expected, the issue may be with the feeder or solar panel.
- If the battery pack doesn't charge, it may need to be replaced.
Test the feeder: Leave the battery pack in place and connect the feeder directly to a USB-C charger with 5V/2A output (e.g., a standard phone wall charger).
- If the feeder powers on and charges, the solar panel or the battery pack may be the issue.
- If it doesn't respond to wired charging, the feeder itself may be malfunctioning.
Test the solar panel: Try charging another USB-C device using the solar panel. If it doesn't provide power, the panel may be defective.

High Trigger Frequency Is Draining the Battery Pack Quickly

Frequent motion detection events can drain the battery pack faster than the solar panel can recharge it. Try the following:

Reduce motion detection sensitivity: Go to Home > Tap settings icon > Motion Detection > Detection Sensitivity and lower the setting.
Reposition the device away from busy walkways, rustling trees, or bright reflective surfaces that may trigger false detections.

Environmental and Weather Factors

Lighting and temperature greatly affect charging efficiency:

Ensure your solar panel receives at least 4–6 hours of strong, direct sunlight each day. With a 3W panel, this amount of sunlight is typically sufficient to maintain battery pack level under moderate usage.
Avoid areas with partial shade from trees, walls, or overhangs.
Position the panel south-facing (in the northern hemisphere). Ideally, tilt your panel at an angle similar to your location's latitude — for most users, that's about 30–45°.
Be aware that overcast weather, rain, snow, or extreme heat can all reduce performance.

Tip: At midday, if the panel casts a strong shadow with sharp edges, the sunlight is likely strong enough for charging. A faint or blurry shadow may indicate insufficient light. A sharp shadow at midday is a good indicator of strong sunlight. A blurry or faint shadow means the panel isn't getting enough intensity.

Understanding How Solar Charging Works

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity. The electricity flows through the connected cable and slowly charges your device's battery pack. This is a trickle charging process — ideal for maintaining charge over time but not for rapidly recharging a fully drained battery pack. A 3W panel provides a low but steady charge, which works best when the feeder's power consumption is balanced with sunlight availability.

Because the system relies on motion detection to determine when to record, any motion activity drains power. If power is drained faster than the panel can recharge, battery pack level will fall even in sunny conditions.
