If your Kiwibit 2 Mini solar roof isn't charging, or the battery is charging more slowly than expected, this guide will help you identify common causes and walk you through the recommended solutions.
How to Tell If the Solar Roof Is Charging
You can check the charging status in two ways:
Check in the Kiwibit App
On the Home Page
Look at the battery icon on the device feed. If you see a green lightning bolt, the solar roof is actively charging the camera.
On the Device Settings Page
Tap the gear icon on the device feed to open Device Settings. The battery percentage appears at the top of the page. When the camera is charging, a green lightning bolt will appear next to the battery status.
Check the Camera Indicator Light
You can also check the charging status directly on the camera:
- Yellow light: The camera is charging.

Green light: The battery is fully charged.
If the Battery Remains Low: Possible Causes and Solutions
Make Sure the Camera Is Properly Installed
The Kiwibit 2 Mini uses a removable camera with a built-in rechargeable battery. Solar power is transferred through the Pogo Pin contacts between the camera and the feeder.
If the camera is not fully seated, the charging contacts may not connect properly.
- Press the release button on the back of the feeder and remove the camera.
- Check the UP marking and the printed orientation guide on the side of the camera.
- Reinsert the camera in the correct direction. Do not install it upside down.
- Push the camera firmly into place until you hear a clear click.
- Make sure the camera sits flush with the surrounding surface. If it protrudes, it may not be fully installed and the charging contacts may not be connected.
Check the Pogo Pin Contacts and Solar Roof
The Kiwibit 2 Mini uses an integrated 1.8 W solar roof. Unlike models that use a USB-C solar charging cable, the solar roof transfers power to the camera through Pogo Pin contacts, so there is no solar cable to plug in.
Check the Pogo Pin Contacts
- Remove the camera and inspect the spring-loaded Pogo Pins on the feeder and the matching metal contacts on the camera.
- Make sure the contacts are clean and free of dust, residue, moisture, or corrosion.
- Check that none of the Pogo Pins are stuck, bent, recessed, or damaged.
- Gently wipe the contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth or dry cotton swab.
- Reinstall the camera in the correct direction until it clicks into place and sits flush with the feeder.
Important: Do not use water or cleaning liquid on the Pogo Pin contacts. Make sure the contacts are completely dry before reinstalling the camera.
Check the Solar Roof Surface
Inspect the solar roof for:
- Dust or smudges
- Leaves
- Bird droppings
- Snow
- Other debris that may block sunlight
Tip: Use a dry, soft cloth to clean the solar roof. For a more thorough cleaning, use a soft cloth lightly dampened with water. Avoid scratching the surface, keep moisture away from the Pogo Pin contacts, and make sure everything is dry before reinstalling the camera.
Check Whether the Camera and Solar Roof Are Working
Test the Camera
Remove the camera from the feeder and charge it directly using a compatible USB-C charger with 5V/2A output, such as a standard phone wall charger.
- If the camera charges normally: The camera and built-in battery are likely working properly. The issue may be related to the solar roof, sunlight conditions, or Pogo Pin connection.
- If the camera does not charge: Try another known-working USB-C cable and 5V/2A power adapter. If it still does not charge, the camera or built-in battery may need service.
Test the Solar Roof
Reinstall the camera in the correct direction and make sure it clicks into place and sits flush with the feeder.
Then place the feeder in strong, direct sunlight and check the charging status in the Kiwibit app.
If the camera charges normally through USB-C but does not charge through the solar roof after you have checked the installation and contacts, the solar roof or its internal connection may be malfunctioning.

Check for High Power Consumption
Frequent motion detection events can drain the built-in battery faster than the 1.8 W solar roof can recharge it.
Battery consumption may also increase due to:
- Frequent motion detection triggers
- Frequent or prolonged Live View use
- Slow Motion recording
- Weak Wi-Fi connection
Try the following:
- Reduce motion detection sensitivity
- Go to Home > Settings > Motion Detection > Detection Sensitivity, then lower the sensitivity setting.
- Reduce false triggers
- Reposition the feeder away from busy walkways, moving branches, rustling trees, or bright reflective surfaces that may repeatedly trigger motion detection.
- Reduce high-power features temporarily
- Limit prolonged Live View use and temporarily turn off Slow Motion to see whether battery performance improves.
Check Environmental and Weather Conditions
Sunlight intensity and weather conditions can significantly affect solar charging efficiency.
For better charging performance:
- Make sure the solar roof receives several hours of strong, direct sunlight each day.
- Avoid locations with partial shade from trees, walls, roofs, or overhangs.
- Position the solar roof toward the direction that receives the most sunlight throughout the day.
- Keep in mind that cloudy weather, rain, snow, short winter days, and extreme temperatures can reduce solar charging performance.
Quick sunlight check: Around midday, look at the shadow cast by the solar roof. A dark shadow with sharp edges generally indicates strong sunlight. A faint or blurry shadow may indicate that the sunlight is not intense enough for efficient solar charging.
Understanding How Solar Charging Works
Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity. On Kiwibit Mini, electricity from the integrated solar roof flows through the Pogo Pin contacts and slowly charges the camera's built-in battery. This is a trickle charging process — ideal for maintaining charge over time but not for rapidly recharging a fully drained battery. The 1.8 W solar roof provides a low but steady charge, which works best when the camera's power consumption is balanced with sunlight availability.
Because the system relies on motion detection to determine when to record, any motion activity drains power. Slow Motion recording and Live View also use additional power. If power is drained faster than the solar roof can recharge, the battery level will fall even in sunny conditions.
That's why proper sunlight placement, moderate motion activity, clean charging contacts, and regular status monitoring are essential for reliable solar-powered performance.
