Battery life can vary depending on how often the device is triggered, recording settings, Live View usage, Wi-Fi conditions, weather, and solar charging performance.
If your device’s battery is draining faster than expected, follow the steps below to identify the possible cause and improve battery life.
1. Common Causes of Faster Battery Drain
1.1 Frequent Motion Events
Every motion event wakes the camera and may trigger detection, recording, video uploads, and notifications. A busy installation area can therefore consume significantly more power.
Frequent triggers may be caused by external activity, such as:
- A high number of bird or animal visitors
- Moving branches or leaves
- Reflective surfaces or rapidly changing shadows
Please note that Detection Preference controls which detected events are recorded or displayed in the app. Motion from branches, leaves, shadows, or other activity may still wake the camera and consume power, even when no corresponding video appears in the app.
Device settings can also affect power consumption. If frequent motion events appear to be contributing to battery drain, refer to Section 2 for settings that may help reduce unnecessary triggers and recordings.
1.2 Longer Recording Duration
Longer video clips require more power to record and upload. If the device frequently records one- to three-minute videos, the battery will drain faster than when shorter recording durations are selected.
To adjust the recording duration:
- Open the Kiwibit app and go to the Home page.
- Tap the gear icon on the device.
- Select Motion Detection.
- Tap Recording Setting.
- Select a shorter cloud or microSD card recording duration.

1.3 Frequent Live View Usage
Watching Live View keeps the camera, Wi-Fi connection, and video transmission active. Frequent or extended Live View sessions, including two-way talk, can noticeably increase power consumption.
Exit Live View when you are finished viewing the camera.
1.4 Unstable Wi-Fi Connection
An unstable Wi-Fi connection primarily affects device connectivity and video uploads. In some cases, repeated reconnection or upload attempts may also increase power consumption.
Make sure the feeder has a stable Wi-Fi connection, especially if you are also experiencing frequent offline events, failed video uploads, or interrupted Live View.
For a more stable connection:
- Keep the feeder within reliable Wi-Fi range.
- Avoid large metal objects, thick walls, or other major obstructions between the feeder and router.
- If the connection has recently become unstable, try restarting your router to see whether the connection improves.
- Check whether other devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network can access the internet normally.
2. Adjust Motion Detection Settings
2.1 Lower Detection Sensitivity
Go to:
Home → Gear icon → Motion Detection → Detection Sensitivity
Try changing the sensitivity from High to Medium or Low. Observe the device for a few days to find the best balance between reliable detection and battery life.
2.2 Enable Detection Preference
Detection Preference helps control which categories of detected events are recorded and displayed in the app. It may reduce unnecessary recordings and uploads, but motion outside the selected categories may still wake the camera and consume power.
Go to:
Home → Gear icon → Motion Detection → Detection Preference
Enable Bird and/or Nuisance Animals based on what you want the feeder to record.
3. Check the Built-In Solar Panel Roof
The built-in solar panel roof is designed to provide gradual supplemental charging and help maintain the battery over time. It may not charge the device as quickly as a USB charger.
The battery level may still decrease while solar charging if the device is consuming more power than the solar roof is producing.
Please check the following:
- Confirm that the app displays a lightning bolt on the battery icon when the solar roof is receiving sufficient sunlight.
- Place the entire feeder in an open location where the solar roof can receive several hours of strong, direct sunlight each day.
- Avoid shade from trees, walls, roof overhangs, or other nearby objects.
- Keep the surface of the solar roof clean and free of dust, leaves, bird droppings, or other debris.
- If necessary, reposition the feeder so the solar roof receives stronger and more consistent sunlight.
- Be aware that cloudy weather, rain, snow, shorter winter daylight hours, and extreme temperatures may reduce charging efficiency.
The built-in solar roof is intended primarily to extend battery life rather than rapidly recharge a nearly empty battery. If the battery level is already very low, fully recharge it with a standard USB charger before returning the feeder to normal use.
4. Fully Recharge Your Device
If the battery level is already very low, the built-in solar panel roof may not provide enough power to restore normal operation. Please fully recharge the device using the method that applies to your model.The battery in the Smart Bird Feeder 2 Mini does not need to be removed for charging.
- Connect a standard 5V/2A USB charger directly to the charging port on the camera.
- Allow the camera to charge fully.
- Disconnect the charging cable and power on the camera.
- Confirm that the battery status has updated in the Kiwibit app.
5. Monitor Battery Usage
After fully charging the battery:
- Record the starting battery percentage and time.
- Use moderate detection sensitivity and a shorter recording duration.
- Keep Live View sessions as short and infrequent as possible.
- Monitor the battery for 24–48 hours.
- Note approximately how many recordings were generated during this period.
This information can help determine whether the battery drain is related to device activity, charging conditions, network stability, or a possible hardware issue.
