If you’re unable to bind your Kiwibit Smart Bird Feeder to the Kiwibit app and see error code 6, 7, 8, or 9 during setup, this guide will walk you through common Wi-Fi and network checks.
These errors usually occur when the feeder cannot connect to your Wi-Fi network or complete its connection to the internet.
What Do These Error Codes Mean?
- Code 6 — Authentication Error The feeder cannot verify the Wi-Fi network settings. Enterprise-level networks are not supported. Please use a compatible home Wi-Fi network with WPA or WPA2 security.
- Code 7 — Router Connection Error The router could not provide the network connection needed by the feeder, so the feeder could not connect to the internet.
- Code 8 — Device Wi-Fi Connection Failed The feeder could not connect to the selected Wi-Fi network.
- Code 9 — Server Connection Timeout The feeder connected to the network but could not complete its connection to the Kiwibit service.
For any of these errors, first check whether the feeder is making a beeping sound. If the feeder is silent, double-click the power button or restart the feeder to enter pairing mode, then try binding it again.
Check Your Wi-Fi Settings
Wi-Fi band support depends on your feeder model:
- Kiwibit Bird Feeder 2 Pro supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi.
- Other Kiwibit feeder models currently support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
If you are not sure which Wi-Fi band your model supports, try using a 2.4GHz network or refer to the setup guide for your specific model.
Please also check the following:
- Set your Wi-Fi security mode to WPA or WPA2. Enterprise-level networks and WPA3 are not currently supported.
- Make sure the Wi-Fi name and password are entered correctly.
- For better compatibility, use a Wi-Fi name and password made mainly of letters and numbers. Avoid special characters or very long Wi-Fi names when possible.
- Avoid using a guest network or a network with additional access restrictions during setup.
If your router has advanced security features that prevent new devices from connecting, contact your internet provider or router manufacturer for assistance.
Restart Your Devices
Restarting your router and feeder can refresh the connection.
- Turn off your router and wait about 30 seconds.
- Turn the router back on and wait until the Wi-Fi network is available.
- Double-click the feeder’s power button or restart the feeder to enter pairing mode.
- Reopen the Kiwibit app and try binding the feeder again.
When the feeder is ready for pairing, it should make a beeping sound. The blue indicator light may also flash.
Check Your Phone and Pairing Distance
Before starting setup, make sure:
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile network settings are turned on as needed.
- The Kiwibit app has permission to use Bluetooth and location services.
- Your phone is connected to the Wi-Fi network you want to use for the feeder.
- Your phone, feeder, and router are close to one another during setup. Keeping them within about 1–2 meters can help provide a more stable connection.
Try Another Network
If the feeder still cannot connect to your home Wi-Fi, try using another available network or a mobile hotspot.
Using a Mobile Hotspot
- Turn on your phone’s personal hotspot using mobile data.
- Use a simple hotspot name and password made mainly of letters and numbers.
- Connect the feeder to the hotspot and try binding it again.
- If binding is successful, open the Kiwibit app and check for available app or firmware updates.
- After updating, try connecting the feeder to your original home Wi-Fi again.
For iPhone Users
After turning on your iPhone’s Personal Hotspot:
- Go to Settings > Personal Hotspot.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join.
- Turn on Maximize Compatibility.
- Return to the Kiwibit app and try binding the feeder to the hotspot again.
Enabling Maximize Compatibility can help the feeder detect the iPhone hotspot and connect successfully.
