Ever wondered who's visiting your backyard when you're not looking? With the Beako™ Smart Bird Feeder, you can do more than feed birds — you can discover and learn about them. Thanks to advanced AI technology, Beako™ can recognize over 10,000 bird species worldwide, turning each visit into a moment of wonder.
How to Tell If Your Feeder Supports AI Identification
Not all Beako™ Smart Bird Feeders include the built-in AI Bird Identification feature—but it's easy to tell which version you have by looking at the roof and body color combination of your feeder:
With Built-in Bird Identification
- Chestnut Brown Roof with Light Green Feeder Body
Without Built-in Bird Identification
These feeders do not include AI Bird Identification by default—but you can still activate the feature separately via the Kiwibit app:
- Sage Pine - Dark Green Roof & Perch + Light Green Feeder Body
- Autumn Clay - Chestnut Brown Roof & Perch + Light Brown Feeder Body
- Bluejay Sky - Dark Blue Roof & Perch + Light Blue Feeder Body
- Forest Birch - Dark Green Roof & Perch + Light Brown Feeder Body
How to Activate Bird Identification
If your feeder includes AI Identification:
When you unpack your feeder, look for a sheet inside — it contains a redeem code. This code unlocks your access to AI-powered bird recognition.
To activate:
- Open the Kiwibit app.
- Go to About Kiwibit
- Tap Redeem Code.
- Enter your code and you're all set.
If your feeder does not include AI Identification:
No worries — you can still access the same smart features by subscribing to Kiwibit Plus.
- In the Kiwibit app, go to Account.
- Tap the banner under your Kiwibit account.
- Choose a plan and complete your purchase.
Tip: We offer a one-month free trial to help you explore all the features risk-free.
How Bird Identification Works
Beako™ uses an ultra-high-definition camera and AI-powered recognition technology to identify birds that land on your feeder. Each time a bird appears, the system analyzes features such as its shape, color, beak type, and patterning to determine its species.
The recognition happens in real-time, and the results are displayed in the Kiwibit app so you can instantly learn who's come to visit.
How to Get the Most Out of Bird Identification
Viewing Bird Keyshots
The app keeps a highlight reel of your bird visitors. Here's how to make the most of it:
- Open the Birds tab to browse all identified species.
- Tap a species to open its keyshots, a visual gallery of that bird.
-
From this page, you can:
- Share the image to social platforms or with friends.
- View in Activity to find the full video.
- Download the photo to your camera roll.
Learning with Bird Wiki
Curious about that woodpecker or finch? We've built learning right into the app:
- Tap Learn on Wiki from the species page, which you can access by opening the Birds tab, selecting a species, and entering its keyshots view.
- Or tap the bird name on the video playback screen to explore facts and species info.
Driving Away Nuisance Animals
Sometimes, it's not just birds at your feeder. If squirrels or raccoons show up, Beako™ can help:
-
Enable nuisance animal detection:
- Home > Settings > Notification Settings > turn on "Nuisance Animals".
-
Enable alarm function:
- Home > Settings > Alarm Settings > toggle on "Nuisance Animal Alarm".
When triggered, the feeder will sound an alert to help scare them away.
Receiving Bird Notifications
Want to know the moment a bird stops by?
- Go to Settings > Notification Settings.
- Enable Bird under "Classification" and toggle on Notification to receive real-time alerts when a bird is recognized.
Filtering Bird Videos
Looking for bird moments only?
- Enable bird classification in notification settings.
- Visit the Activity page and tap the Filter icon.
- Select Bird to view only videos tagged with bird activity.
What If a Bird Isn't Identified?
AI isn't perfect, especially in less-than-ideal conditions. Your feeder may not recognize a bird if:
- Lighting is too dim.
- Only part of the bird is visible.
- The bird moves too quickly.
- The species is rare or not in our database.
In such cases, the app will display "A bird detected" without a name.
You can help:
- Ensure the camera is clean and has good lighting.
Tap into the video > tap Send Feedback > upload the video to help improve recognition.
For step-by-step instructions, see this guide.
What If a Bird Is Misidentified?
Some birds look surprisingly alike — it happens! If the app gets it wrong:
On the video playback screen:
- Tap the bird name > Tap "Mark as misrecognized" > Suggest the correct species name and submit. For step-by-step instructions, see this guide.
Or tap Send feedback > upload the video to help improve recognition.
For step-by-step instructions, see this guide.
On the Birds tab:
- Find the bird species in question > Tap the "..." button > Select "Mark as misidentified", which will remove the current cover photo and allow the system to choose another keyshot from that species' visits.
Every correction makes our database smarter and more accurate for you and the entire Beako™ community.
