This guide aims to help you troubleshoot and resolve issues related to short battery life on your Kiwibit camera. If you notice that your camera's battery drains more quickly than expected, follow the steps below to extend its battery life and optimize overall performance.
Minimizing Unnecessary Motion Triggers
The more frequently your camera detects motion, the faster its battery will drain. To help preserve battery life, you can reduce unnecessary motion detections by following the tips below.
-
Adjust Installation:
-
Avoid placing the camera in high-traffic areas, such as streets or sidewalks, where frequent movement may trigger unnecessary motion detection.
-
Avoid placing the camera directly in front of tree branches or flags, as movement caused by wind may trigger unnecessary motion detection.
-
Avoid placing the camera directly at the sun, as strong light may affect image quality and trigger false motion alerts.
-
-
Lower Motion Detection Sensitivity:
Lowering sensitivity shortens the distance the camera can detect movement, which decreases the frequency of motion triggers and helps conserve battery life. Please lower motion detection sensitivity as follows:-
Go to Home page in Kiwibit app.
-
Tap Camera Setting Gear Icon.
-
Tap Motion Detection.
-
Select Motion Sensitivity, and set it to Low or Medium.
-
Note: Lower sensitivity may cause the camera to miss some motion events, especially if the movement occurs farther away. We recommend adjusting the setting based on your environment and monitoring the results to find the optimal balance between accuracy and battery life.
-
Shorten Recording Duration:
Reducing the video recording length helps minimize how long the camera stays active during each event, which can extend battery life. Here's how to do it:-
Go to Home page in Kiwibit app.
-
Tap Camera Setting Gear Icon.
-
Tap Motion Detection.
-
Tap Recording Setting.
-
Go to Cloud Recording Duration/SD Card Recording Duration(if you have a microSD card installed).
-
Select a shorten duration.
-
Note: Reducing both the cloud and SD card recording lengths can further improve battery performance. However, shorter recordings may miss parts of motion events. We recommend adjusting these settings based on your environment and observing the results to find the best balance.
-
Increase Cooldown Time:
During the cooldown time, the camera won't record or detect movements. Consider setting a longer cooldown time to extend battery life. Here's how to do it:-
Go to Home page in Kiwibit app.
-
Tap Camera Setting Gear Icon.
-
Tap Motion Detection.
-
Tap Recording Setting.
-
Go to Cloud Recording Interval Time/SD Card Recording Interval Time(if you have a microSD card installed).
-
Select a longer duration.
-
Note: Increasing both the cloud recording interval and the SD card recording interval provides better battery-saving results. However, it may also increase the chance of missing motion events. We recommend adjusting these settings based on your specific environment and monitoring the performance accordingly.
-
Enable Sleep Mode or Set a Sleep Schedule
When the camera is in Sleep Mode, all recordings, alarms, and notifications will be turned off. If you don't need the camera to stay active, putting it into Sleep Mode can significantly extend battery life. Here's how to do it:-
Go to Home page in Kiwibit app.
-
Tap Camera Setting Gear Icon.
-
Tap Motion Detection.
-
Enable Sleep Mode.
Enabling Sleep Mode without setting a schedule puts the camera into sleep immediately, during which it stops detecting motion or recording. You'll need to manually reactivate the camera to resume normal operation. To set a recurring sleep schedule (so the camera automatically sleeps and wakes at specific times), follow these steps: -
-
-
Go to the Home page in the Kiwibit app.
-
Tap the Camera Settings gear icon.
-
Tap Motion Detection.
-
Enable Schedule Sleep, then tap Schedule Settings.
-
Set your preferred start and end times for automatic sleep.
-
Maintain a Stable Network Connection
If the camera is struggling to maintain a stable network connection, it will continuously search for a signal, which can quickly drain the battery. To improve connection stability and preserve battery life:
-
Place the Camera Closer to Your Router: Make sure the camera is within range of your Wi-Fi router.
-
Avoid Signal Interference: Try not to place the camera near thick walls, metal surfaces, or large electronic devices that can weaken or block the Wi-Fi signal.
-
Use a Wi-Fi Extender: If the signal is weak at the camera's location, consider installing a Wi-Fi extender to boost coverage and maintain a reliable connection.
Avoid Watching Live View for Too Long
Every time you view the live stream, the camera stays fully active. Watching the live view for long periods can quickly drain the battery.
Avoid Extreme Temperatures
Extreme weather conditions (especially in extremely cold environments) can affect battery performance and lead to faster power drains. To get the best battery life, install the camera in environments where the temperature stays between -10°C and 45°C (14°F to 113°F).
