This article provides essential information on the types of Wi-Fi networks supported by your Kiwibit device, explains compatibility restrictions, and offers router configuration tips to help ensure a smooth connection. Additionally, it includes troubleshooting steps to address common connectivity issues.
What Type of Wi-Fi Does the Kiwibit Device Support?
The Kiwibit device supports home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
Why Doesn't the Kiwibit Device Support 5GHz Wi-Fi or Enterprise-grade Wi-Fi?
-
2.4GHz Wi-Fi vs. 5GHz Wi-Fi: The primary difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi is their frequency. The 5GHz signal has a higher frequency and a shorter wavelength, while the 2.4GHz signal has a lower frequency and a longer wavelength. As a result, 2.4GHz signal penetrates obstacles more effectively, making them more reliable for passing through walls. Therefore, to ensure a more stable connection, most smart security cameras, including the Kiwibit Battery Camera 1, support only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
-
Home Wi-Fi vs. Enterprise-grade Wi-Fi: Enterprise-grade Wi-Fi often requires an additional security certificate, which the Kiwibit device cannot process; therefore, it is incompatible with enterprise-grade Wi-Fi. In contrast, home Wi-Fi requires only a Wi-Fi name and password, allowing your Kiwibit device to connect easily.
What to Expect with a Single-Band or Dual-Band Router?
-
Routers with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Only: The Kiwibit device can connect directly to routers that only support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
-
Dual-Band Routers (2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi):
-
If you've enabled "Smart Connect"(or a similar feature) that combines the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi into a single SSID and password, the Kiwibit device will automatically connect to the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
-
If "Smart Connect"(or a similar feature) is not enabled, the Kiwibit device cannot automatically connect to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Please be sure to select the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi during setup.
-
-
Routers with 5GHz Wi-Fi Only: The Kiwibit device cannot connect to routers that support only 5GHz Wi-Fi. In this case, you may need to switch to a router that supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
How to Optimize Wi-Fi Connection of Your Kiwibit Device?
-
Move Device Closer to Router: If the Kiwibit device is too far from the router, it may struggle to maintain a stable connection. Try reducing the distance between the device and the router to ensure a strong 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal.
-
Remove Unnecessary Devices Connected to the Router: If your Wi-Fi router is connected to too many devices, such as multiple phones and computers, it may cause IP address conflicts that prevent your Kiwibit device from connecting. To ensure a stable connection, try reducing the number of devices connected to your router.
